AI Summary

The Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority – MEKH has awarded the first official certification to a plant producing renewable hydrogen.

The plant qualification decision was given to the Magyar Földgáztároló – MFGT – Hungarian Gas Storage facility. The ruling will allow the company’s Kardoskút plant to become the first in Hungary to produce renewable hydrogen by converting renewable electricity. The facility generates the gas through water electrolysis and the use of proton exchange membrane – PEM technology. Following a professional audit and technical review, the regulator confirmed the plant can verify its output with official guarantees of origin.

The first plant producing renewable hydrogen certification is in compliance with the European Union regulations and intend to ensure transparency for consumers and to trace the origin of the energy used in the grid. MEKH recently upgraded its IT infrastructure to allow registration of hydrogen and other different renewable gases like biogas and biomethane. The new certification system is a significant step in increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix. The move gives a formal framework for industrial players to demonstrate the green credentials of their fuel.

MFGT is the biggest commercial natural gas storage operator in Hungary. The company operates four large underground storage sites, in Zsana, Pusztaederics, Kardoskút and Hajdúszoboszló. MFGT is part of the MVM Group, Hungary’s largest state-owned energy business.
