AI Summary

Acwa which is the largest private water desalination company in the world and also a leader in the energy transition domain, with a first mover status in green hydrogen at scale, has been granted government approval for the company’s exclusive rights to export green hydrogen and derivatives from Saudi Arabia throughout the global markets.

These derivatives are green ammonia, green methanol as well as green fuels.

It is worth noting that the approval to export green hydrogen and derivatives from Saudi Arabia follows increasing global demand for clean molecules, with Saudi Arabia looking to convert its competitive edge in renewable resources into long-term export earnings. The government endorsement aligns with the strategic goals of the Kingdom to make Saudi Arabia a world leader when it comes to clean energy exports as well as fast-track the emergence of a diversified and low-carbon economy under the Vision 2030 umbrella.

As per the approval granted, Acwa is additionally tasked with establishing projects for the generation and transmission as well as export of electricity produced using renewable energy sources to European as well as Arab markets. This will serve to enhance the regional energy security while, at the same time, allowing the Kingdom to export affordable and clean electricity.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Acwa, Dr. Samir J. Serhan, “This government approval reflects the Kingdom’s confidence in Acwa’s ability to deliver strategic infrastructure at scale and reinforces our responsibility to help position Saudi Arabia as a leading global exporter of clean energy. Green hydrogen and renewable electricity exports represent the next chapter in the Kingdom’s energy leadership, creating new opportunities for economic growth while contributing to global energy security and the energy transition. We are honored to support this national ambition and remain committed to delivering the infrastructure that creates long-term value for the Kingdom and its partners around the world.”

Apparently, this mandate builds on the existing leadership of Acwa when it comes to renewable energy and desalination as well as its cutting-edge role in green hydrogen at a global level. This involves its involvement in the development of NEOM Green Hydrogen, which is one of the largest green hydrogen projects in the world.

As per Dr. Serhan, “This mandate expands Acwa’s role in contributing to the Kingdom’s future clean energy economy and defines the next architecture of Saudi Arabia’s energy export strategy. Our experience in developing, financing, constructing, and operating large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects provides the execution foundation that this assignment demands. We look forward to working closely with government entities, strategic partners, and international stakeholders to develop the integrated export infrastructure that connects Saudi Arabia’s abundant renewable resources with growing global demand for clean molecules and clean electricity.”

Notably, this approval further solidifies Acwa’s long-term growth approach by adding an independent export element to an existing diversified infrastructure platform, which includes green hydrogen, renewable energy, and electricity transmission, as well as energy infrastructure, while at the same time strengthening the position of Saudi Arabia as a trustworthy supplier of sustainable energy solutions all across the international markets.
