Green Hydrogen Development Holding Limited, which is a subsidiary of United Energy Group – UEG has gone ahead and inked a Memorandum of Understanding – MoU with Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Company, Alexandria Fertilizers Company – Alexfert, as well as Orascom Construction SAE in order to look into building a Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Hub in Alexandria.
The goal of the Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Hub is to create a large-scale alternative to natural gas by making green hydrogen using renewable energy and connecting it to the existing ammonia infrastructure.
The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources – MoPMR booth during the Egypt Energy Show 2026 – EGYPES. The MoPMR’s First Undersecretary for Production, Ihab Ragaee, and Song Yu, the Chairman of UEG, were both there.
According to the MoU, UEG and Orascom Construction will be in charge of feasibility studies for 500 megawatts – MW of renewable energy generation, both wind and solar, and green hydrogen production capacity equal to 480 tons of green ammonia per day.
Kamel Elsawi, the Regional President of UEG Africa, said, “Egypt offers a strategic gateway for green energy investments, and we are actively working to bolster project studies and partnerships to bring this vision into reality.”
It is well to be noted that the Hong Kong Stock Exchange lists UEG as one of the top integrated independent energy companies.
Abu Qir and Alexfert will look into how to use green hydrogen in the production of ammonia while also making sure that local resources and infrastructure are available.
Hany Dahy, Chairman of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Company, said, “This partnership reflects Abu Qir’s commitment to leading the transition toward low-carbon ammonia production, leveraging our existing assets while integrating green hydrogen solutions.”
Alaa Elbanna, the Chairman of Alexfert, said that the company is looking into ways to use green hydrogen in ammonia production in a way that is both more environmentally friendly and keeps the company running smoothly.
Gu Xiaodong, the General Manager of UEG Hydrogen Limited, said that the partners are moving forward with development work to create a platform that can be used by both local businesses and companies that export goods.
The project fits with Egypt’s goal of becoming a center for green fuels, such as renewable fuels of non-biological origin – RFNBO.
According to Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, the MoPMR is now putting together investment incentive packages to help the country get 8% of the global green hydrogen market share and produce 10 million tons – mmt of it every year.
