- Nobian has gone on to take another step toward building a strong and reliable Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin – RFNBO portfolio by getting the green hydrogen made at its Frankfurt site certified.
- This success is the result of a year of hard work to expand its range of low-carbon products.
- In 2025, Nobian became the first European chemical company to offer a full range of ISCC PLUS-certified chloromethanes. This came after green hydrogen was certified in Rotterdam, and Frankfurt was added to the network.
Increasing the availability of certified, traceable green molecules
The RFNBO certification for Nobian in Frankfurt is more than just a regulatory milestone – it is also the next step in a long-term plan to speed up the shift to low-carbon chemical production across Europe. Nobian’s chlor-alkali electrolysis process will now provide up to 6,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to the Frankfurt site. This process is powered entirely by renewable electricity.
Certified green hydrogen under ISCC EU RFNBO
RFNBO certification for Nobian means that its customers can trust that the green hydrogen meets the EU’s strictest standards for sustainability and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Producers must show the following under the ISCC EU framework: –
- Full traceability of renewable energy
- Meeting strict limits on emissions
- Clear records throughout the whole production chain
This means that customers can trust this solution to help them move forward on their own paths to decarbonization, whether they work in chemicals, transportation, or other energy-intensive fields.
Helping customers and speeding up the RFNBO markets
The Frankfurt site’s certification is a big step forward for Nobian’s renewable hydrogen portfolio. It makes it easier for the company to help customers reach the EU’s 2030 decarbonization goals, which call for a rapidly growing share of renewable hydrogen in industry and transportation.
But the effects go beyond what Nobian does. By working closely with regional partners, they are bringing RFNBO hydrogen from Frankfurt to the market. This will help build a larger hydrogen ecosystem in Germany and all of Europe. This momentum, which is based on the earlier RFNBO certification in Rotterdam, puts Nobian in a position to help Europe move toward value chains that are more sustainable and have lower carbon footprints.
Markus Mingenbach, Senior Vice President Chlor-Alkali & Chloromethanes at Nobian, opines that “Adding the Frankfurt production site to our RFNBO offering solidifies Nobian’s leadership as Europe’s largest producer of certified green hydrogen. This certification underscores Nobian’s commitment to providing low-carbon hydrogen solutions across our network and reflects how we put our Grow Greener Together ambition into practice every day.”
Julien Courtois, Senior Product & Business Development Manager Hydrogen at Nobian, said, “Adding the Frankfurt production site to our RFNBO offering solidifies Nobian’s leadership as Europe’s largest producer of certified green hydrogen.”
Going Forward
Nobian will keep working with industry partners, policymakers, and regulators to grow its RFNBO portfolio of low-carbon products. The company is helping Europe move toward a climate-neutral industrial system in the long term by way of having certified production in both the Netherlands and Germany.
