Eneos, the Japanese energy giant, may be able to import green hydrogen-based e-fuels from Germany under a new deal with German eFuel One – GEF1.

GEF1 could provide the oil refiner with a specified amount of green hydrogen-based e-gasoline from its proposed 75,000-tonne-per-year project in Lower Saxony, according to a forward-looking agreement.

Eneos said the green hydrogen-based e-fuels could be made available to transport and mobility customers, helping to decarbonize current vehicle fleets as well as infrastructure.

While the deal has not been sealed yet, but GEF1 says it could help achieve climate objectives in Europe and Japan and bolster Germany’s standing as an e-fuel producer and exporter.

GEF1 plans to launch its plant in late 2028 and will purchase e-methanol from the planned Uruguay facility of HIF under a non-binding deal agreed upon earlier in 2026.

It will deploy the Methafuel technology of CAC Engineering to transform the molecule into drop-in e-gasoline in accordance with modern cars and fuel infrastructure.

Japan is likely to be a big importer of e-fuels as it tries to decarbonize sectors including mobility, shipping, power, aviation, and heavy industry, while still relying significantly on imported energy.

Domestic manufacturing is being encouraged, but the likelihood is that overseas supply will be centralized, given restricted renewable energy resources and substantial production expenses.
