The consortium will commence with 4 founding members, which are DBS Bank Limited; the Infrastructure Division of Keppel Ltd – Keppel; Surbana Jurong Private Limited; and YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited.

It is well to be noted that the global average carbon dioxide emissions hit a new record high in 2024. Global warming happens when greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide cover the earth’s surface and retain heat. Our planet is currently warming at higher rates than ever before in history, leading to climate change and its ripple effects, such as natural disasters occurring more frequently, higher sea levels, loss of food supply, health risks, and much more. According to the director of CHCI, Professor Yan Ning, “Burning of fossil fuels to generate power is the biggest contributor of carbon dioxide emissions. Projects at CHCI directly tackle this issue by researching hydrogen, a promising alternative to fossil fuels, and developing innovative methods of carbon capture and transformation.”

The only by-product is water when hydrogen is utilised to produce power. There is no carbon dioxide that’s emitted.

Professor Yan further added that “Our research on hydrogen production and utilisation plays a vital role in curbing carbon emissions. However, translating these scientific innovations into widespread market adoption requires expertise beyond the laboratory. This is where HyLoCC comes in, by filling the crucial gap between academic research and industry. HyLoCC ensures that cutting-edge hydrogen and carbon innovations in the lab can be more readily translated into a reality.”

Create a decarbonization powerhouse

It is well to be noted that Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Consortium aims to catalyze the research commercialisation of decarbonization solutions through establishing a solid ecosystem that links research labs and start-ups as well as companies together with appropriate stakeholders along the value chain in order to enable end-to-end technology implementation.

The main activities and services of HyLoCC are summarised below –

  • Conduct regular seminars with academic as well as industry speakers, specialised workshops and networking sessions
  • Enable collaborative studies via customized company-to-CHCI research projects to address specific problem statements
  • Offer consortium members the access to the integrated equipment and analysis platform of CHCI for assessment of hydrogen and carbon utilization technologies which also includes techno-economic evaluation
  • Build talent and expertise by way of continuing education and training courses from CHCI and also via collaborative postgraduate projects and undergraduate initiatives undertaken with consortium members and research partners as well as companies.

Professor Yan says that “HyLoCC is an avenue where leading experts from various hydrogen and low-carbon sectors can come together to brainstorm ideas and share dedicated resources and information to solve real-world problems. These synergistic collaborations would build up our arsenal of decarbonisation solutions to fight against global warming and climate change.”

The strategic priorities of the consortium are going to be shaped by the views and also insights coming from HyLoCC’s founding members.
