The Friedrich Vorwerk Group SE, one of the top suppliers of energy infrastructure, has been granted a major deal for the development of H2 Coastlink 1 hydrogen pipeline between Emden and Leer.
Friedrich Vorwerk will be performing the role of general contractor on behalf of the project developer and long-distance pipeline operator GTG Nord GmbH in a joint venture with EWE NETZ GmbH.
The center of the new route is a high-pressure hydrogen pipeline with a circumference of DN 400 and a length of approximately 24 km, including the connecting pipeline from the future electrolyzer to the hydrogen injection plant located in Emden and the connecting lines to the supra-regional hydrogen network in Leer.
The estimated worth of the agreement is tens of millions of euros, and preliminary preparation is expected to start in the summer of 2026. The pipeline shall be commissioned and transferred over to GTG Nord GmbH in 2027 autumn.
It is well to be noted that GTG Nord GmbH is the long-distance pipeline provider in the EWE Group. The pipeline is scheduled to link the 320 MW generation plant built by EWE Hydrogen GmbH in Emden-Borssum to the hydrogen infrastructure, which is under construction in Leer-Nord in the northwest of Germany. There it will be linked to the HyperLink hydrogen backbone of Gasunie Deutschland along with the gas transport pipeline of GTG Nord GmbH.
Apparently, the H2 Coastlink 1 Hydrogen Pipeline is one of many sub-projects that are being actively supported by the IPCEI hydrogen program of the German Federal Government and the state of Lower Saxony. It is also a part of the German core hydrogen network that links critical hydrogen hubs – right from big industrial centers to warehouse facilities as well as power plants, all along the route to import corridors. The route will traverse roughly 90 crossings, including sensitive ecological zones and water bodies, along with transportation routes, which will be crossed, in addition to other methods, via trenchless horizontal directional drilling – HDD. Network operators are at present arranging a number of new construction and expansion projects, which are being carried out on a priority schedule, since many new hydrogen and power plant sites are required to be connected to the existing system and the anticipated completion of the approximately 9,000 km long core hydrogen network.
