AI Summary

Savage Companies, along with Symbio North America, has gone ahead and unveiled the first hydrogen-electric fuel cell drayage truck. The truck is a 4×2 Class‑8 Zero‑Emission Vehicle – ZEV which is fully built and commissioned less than a year after their partnership began at ACT Expo 2025.

The curb weight of hydrogen-electric fuel cell drayage truck is around 17,000 pounds, which is indeed the lightest known ZEV tractor in its category, enabling higher payload capacity. It happens to have Symbio’s next‑gen hydrogen fuel cell driveline with 150 kW peak power using a multi‑StackPack™ architecture. As far as hydrogen storage is concerned, it has FORVIA’s 70 MPa XL tanks, holding 34 kg onboard hydrogen, that go on to support a full-shift operation without mid-shift refueling.

The truck has diesel-equivalent gradeability when it comes to safe refueling, it is well under 15 minutes, and it comes with a modular design for flexible fleet deployment.

Savage is going to operate the truck in real-world drayage environments, having 24/7 duty cycles.

All this indeed marks the start of transitioning 70+ California drayage trucks from Savage to zero-emission solutions.

The partnership emphasizes cost-effective integration and data-driven optimization as well as a competitive total cost of ownership – TCO.

According to VP Procurement at Savage, Tyler Flynn, “The launch of this fleet marks a major step forward in how we operate in the region. This truck will allow us to reduce our environmental footprint while delivering the same reliability and performance our customers expect.”

Says Business Development Director and Technical Advisor at Symbio North America, Rick Breunesse, “Delivering this truck is a proud moment for our engineering and integration teams. This vehicle is specifically designed around a use case that benefits from electrification, quick refueling time, and diesel weight parity this package has it all!”
