AI Summary

On September 7, 2026, Toyota and Scania announced that they will collaborate to promote hydrogen fuel cell solutions for heavy-duty mobility in real-world logistics operations.

Toyota is going to supply fuel cell systems to 40 heavy-duty vehicles in the Pilot Partner program from Scania in the course of this partnership. The program unites Scania and a number of selected customers to test a broad spectrum of sustainable transport technologies, which includes the hydrogen fuel cell system, under real operating conditions. The project is expected to deliver validation of technical effectiveness, operational efficiency, and overall cost of ownership as the market for zero-emission heavy-duty fuel cell applications expands. The partnership on hydrogen fuel cell solutions for heavy-duty mobility is going to explore the possibilities for fuel cell electric trucks to cope with demanding heavy-duty transport operations, using the hydrogen fuel cell technology from Toyota in this context.

The vehicles will be fitted with the latest third-generation fuel-cell system of Toyota, which produces 300kW of power in a compact design for heavy-duty uses and a variety of other scenarios.

The first of the Scania hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks will be on the road in Q1 2027.

According to the executive vice president of Toyota Motor Corporation, Hiroki Nakajima, “We believe heavy-duty transport is key to building hydrogen demand and infrastructure. Furthermore, we believe hydrogen is the right solution for demanding heavy-duty applications, where long range, high utilization, and operational efficiency are essential. By bringing Toyota’s third-generation fuel cell system into Scania customers’ logistics operations, we are taking an important step together towards enabling hydrogen-powered mobility to play a larger role across Europe’s heavy-duty transport industry.”

Says Chief Technology Officer at Scania, Sara Forsberg, “We are pleased to partner with Toyota to explore how fuel cell technology performs in demanding real-world transport operations. Through our Pilot Partner programme, we work with selected customers to test new technologies in actual use cases, learn from their experience, and develop our solutions further. This collaboration will give us valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with hydrogen fuel cell technology in heavy-duty transport.”

Further information will be provided at Toyota’s IAA Transportation press conference, which is to be held on 14 September, 2026.
