On September 16, 2026, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and CWP Global, which is a company specialized in the development of renewable energy projects, agreed on the Global Convention for the advancement of the AMAN green hydrogen project.
It is well to be noted that this agreement provides the economic, fiscal, and development terms of the project along with the long-term contractual structure for the subsequent stages of the project.
The signing symbolizes a major milestone for one of the largest green hydrogen projects in the world and also the first Global Convention, which has been signed by Mauritania.
In his address, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Khaled, the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, said that “This agreement reflects the trust international investors place in Mauritania’s energy sector and establishes a comprehensive framework for project development. It is a major step toward achieving Mauritania’s ambition to become a global hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen.”
The Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, Abdessalem Ould Daddah, remarked, “This is a historic moment for our company, for Mauritanians, and for the future of the global green molecules industry. We thank the Mauritanian government for its strategic vision. Mauritania is ideally positioned to supply global markets with clean energy. The project has now reached the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage, and we are targeting a Final Investment Decision before 2030.”
Notably, it was in 2020 that the energy sector launched the AMAN project in cooperation with CWP Global, taking advantage of the vast potential of the country when it comes to renewable energy and strategic geographical location.
This was subsequently followed by an MOU in 2021 and a Framework Agreement in 2022 to set the basis of the partnership.
The AMAN green hydrogen project aims to generate 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 6.6 million tonnes of green ammonia annually for use in fertilizer production and food security as well as clean fuel.
Besides, it also opens new industrial opportunities for Mauritania, in particular, when it comes to the manufacturing of green steel as well as the local processing of iron ore.
