Moeve has signed two agreements with Alter Enersun to cover a part of the electricity supply when it comes to the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. The photovoltaic plant La Luz in Huelva is already in operation and has a firm long-term PPA for 265,000 MWh a year. A second term sheet, also a preliminary deal, is for another 235,000 MWh a year from Puerto Sostenible, a solar project under development. That agreement would only become a final contract if the project goes ahead and both sides can agree on binding terms. Puerto Sostenible is expected to be operational by 2028, about the same time Moeve expects to commission the Onuba electrolyser.
The two plants will serve Onuba under a direct self-consumption regime. Alter Enersun will be responsible for the technical development, construction, and long-term operation of the generation facilities. The company has secured over €250 million or $272 million of investment throughout the two plants.
According to Miguel Ángel Devesa, hydrogen director at Moeve, “The collaboration with Alter Enersun will help develop the energy ecosystem required for the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and promote the industrial and economic development of Andalusia.
Spain imports nearly all of the natural gas it consumes but has enough sun, industry, and talent to generate its own renewable hydrogen, José Luis Morlanes, CEO of Alter Enersun, said in comments translated.
It is worth noting that Onuba will begin with 300MW of electrolysis capacity, which can be expanded by a further 105MW. Total investment in this first phase is more than €1 billion or $1.09 billion. The plant is expected to generate about 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year and reduce about 250,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
The project is led by Moeve with 51% of the capital. Hy24 and Cofides combined hold 29%, with Enagás Renovable and Alter Enersun dividing the remaining 20%. The hydrogen produced will provide transport fuels and industrial decarbonization.
Alter Enersun is also developing a 30MW self-consumption project with Atlantic Copper, three other large industrial supply projects in Andalusia as well as Castilla y León, and energy proposals for multiple mining operations. The group aims to be operating more than 1 GW by 2030.
